Smith-Walker Research Unit

Smith-Walker Research Unit

Overview

The Smith Walker Research Unit is comprised of approximately 480 acres of cultivated land and 1750 acres of range and pasture land located approximately eight miles south of Vernon, TX, on US Highway 183.

Major Projects

The focus is on sustainable production of products from croplands and rangelands.  No-till, reduced-till, and organic crop production systems research is conducted.  Rangeland research emphasizes understanding the mechanisms and interactions of woody plants, soils, livestock, wildlife, hydrology, and husbandry.  The goal is to develop strategies for improvement of natural resources in the Southern Great Plains.

We partner with the Smith and Walker families to provide solutions for the challenges of today and tomorrow.
